What is Canada Miyake (Taiko) Kai?

❶ Canada Miyake Taiko Kai is a group established by Noriko Kobayashi (NoriNori) in 2016 for the taiko drummers enjoying Miyake Taiko (the traditional drumming style from Miyake Island, Japan) in Canada.

Our activities include:

❶ Joining our weekly Miyake style taiko classes in Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre (three terms a year)

      1) Good exercise to release stress and lower blood pressure (good for seniors too)

                    by hitting Taiko very hard using your entire body and possibly chanting loudly

      2) Stretch before and after the drumming

      3) Socialization through the community drumming originated from an islanders' festival 

❷ Joining our performances at local festivals (e.g.  at Sunset Community Centre on Canada Day and Powell Street Festival)

❸ Joining our special workshops (once every two years) in Vancouver with the Japanese teachers (Tumura family) originally from Miyake Island, Japan.

❹ Joining international events (e.g. usual Miyake Taiko practices, workshops and performances in Japan, USA, Australia, Singapore,  etc.)   

 ❷ Canada Miyake Taiko Kai is one of the official international branches (USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong) of Miyake Jima Geinou Doushi Kai, Japan.
